Carrara Marble
About this work
A private portrait commission hand-finished over fourteen months — the collector's requested anonymity preserved in abstraction.
Technique
Hand-carved from single Carrara block across fourteen months. Reference: live observation only, no photographs.
Surface & finish
Semi-polished satin throughout. Deliberately not mirror-polished to preserve the quality of arrested movement.
Artistic background
“The collector gave one instruction: the work must be recognisable to those who know the subject, unrecognisable to those who do not. The sculptor spent three months with the subject before touching stone — drawing, observing posture, recording the way the subject occupied a room. The marble was then carved not as a portrait of appearance but of presence: the weight distribution, the habitual angle of the head, the quality of stillness unique to that person. No photograph was taken as reference.”
