“The drapery was the central problem of this commission. The collector requested a Lakshmi without the lotus, without the coins — stripped to the essential quality of the goddess as abundance expressed through physical presence. The sculptor chose instead to carve the fabric as the narrative: each fold of the Statuario marble represents time passing — abundance as duration rather than possession. The carving of the fabric alone took six months.”
